MISSION STATEMENT

The National Collegiate Marching Band Championships & Festival is an annual festival in Columbia, South Carolina, created in 2016 to foster healthy competition and goodwill among collegiate marching bands across the United States. Our goal is to increase awareness of the significant role of college marching bands in American culture, while encouraging participation and support from both the public and private sectors.

Championship & Festival

The National Collegiate Marching Band Championships & Festival will consist of competition and also exhibition by non-competing bands. Although technical aspects will be included, scoring will be based more heavily on the college brand of entertainment value. All participating bands will be asked to include a two-to-three minute performance (non-judged) at the beginning of their show to promote each university’s spirit and individuality.

Please submit a video audition by January 10th 2017 if your school is interested in participating in our national festival! Your video audition should only include competitive or exhibition sample show of 7 to 11 minutes in duration.

If you are involved in marching bands, get involved by taking our survey! High school or middle schools may use our festival ticket sales as a fundraising tool. Contact us at info@marchingchamps.com or phone us for more information.

OUR STORY

Bob Lane

President, National Collegiate Marching Band Championships

In the early 1980's, Bob Lane was a freshman in the University of South Carolina's "Mighty Sound of the Southeast," a stellar marching band under the direction of the late, beloved Dr. James K. Copenhaver. The first question Bob asked his Band Director was simple enough: "Dr. Copenhaver, when do we compete?" Bob remembers fondly how his Director smiled and said, "That would be nice, Bob, but we only perform at sporting events.” The young man thought of the numerous competitions in which his high school band had taken part, and he noted, "It seems like a lot of work. I wish we were able to win something." Wheels began turning in the fresh-faced college freshman's mind. Years have passed since then, but the idea has grown exponentially.

Now, Lane and his team have founded the National Collegiate Marching Band Championships & Festival in Columbia, S.C., to showcase college marching bands from across the United States for their extreme hard work and contribution to American culture.
